Episode 28:How Baseball Principles Can Transform Your Business Strategy
The Birth of "Stuck on First"
More than 10 years ago, as part of the Dan Kennedy community, Dan Kennedy taught us to write a book to position ourselves as authorities. So, I wrote "Stuck on First" to share practical and actionable experiences that can genuinely help you grow your business. After revising it recently, I realized it’s still incredibly relevant.
Dividing the Game: Nine Positions
Just like on a baseball field, there are nine key areas you need to focus on to get your business to where you want it to be. Let’s break those down:
1. Find Your Product
First off, find what you're delivering to your clients. Make sure you’re committed to it, passionate about it, and that it’s profitable. Too often, people create products they think are amazing but don’t appeal to the market. Avoid selling purely on price; instead, offer something unique that truly solves a problem.
2. Find Your Fans
Next, find your raving fans—not just customers but superfans who will become your brand advocates. Think of the Apple or Tesla superfans of the past. These are your ideal customers who will stick with you and refer others.
3. Understand Pricing and Costs
Understand your pricing and costs. Don’t undervalue yourself. Offering premium services doesn’t necessarily mean added costs; it could be about providing a better experience, like giving personal calls instead of automated messages.
4. Deliver and Scale
Focus on delivering value and finding ways to scale. Whether you're in retail, home services, or any other industry, enhancing the customer experience and documenting the process can set you apart from competitors.
5. Build a High-Performing Team
Your team is your dugout. Invest in them. Use models like the Working Genius to enable them to be independent thinkers. A motivated and well-supported team drives better customer service and business growth.
6. Enhance Customer Experience
The outfield represents the customer experience. Find ways to exceed their expectations, whether it’s sending birthday gifts to top clients or offering personalized interactions that make them feel valued.
7. Develop a Structured Sales Process
Your bullpen is your sales team. Have a structured, repeatable sales process focusing on building relationships rather than just closing transactions. Salespeople should focus on nurturing leads and having meaningful conversations.
8. Track Your Metrics
You need a scoreboard to track your progress. Develop dashboards that provide insights into both operational tasks and results. Understanding these metrics allows you to course-correct and optimize performance.
9. Stay Profitable
Finally, your business needs to be profitable. Whether it's via operational or financial scoreboards, ensure you know your numbers, understand where to make adjustments, and always aim to provide value.
I hope this overview has given you valuable insights into building a playoff-ready business. "Stuck on First" is all about creating the business you want, not just the one you have.
